After blogging for almost a year and a half, I’ve come to realize that I’m not the same person I was when I started blogging.
It took a while, kind of like the way a blacksmith in a past times would hammer away at a sword blade, continuing to harden the metal, while also shaping the edge of the blade. Blogging has had that type of effect on me! I can tell that blogging has sharpened both my communications skills and my writing abilities!
Back when I started, word were difficult to write down, and I guess you could say that I was a writing weakling. While writing still isn’t my strong point, I have strengthened this ability, much like a weight lifter would improve their muscle tone by lifting weight day in and day out.
Advantages of Blogging
- I can now write better than I have ever before,
- My sense of organization have improved vastly!
- My patience for the tedious tasks done has also improved vastly.
- I’m not afraid to seem pretentious by using words that are not typically used day in and day out.
- I’m no longer intimidated by others that have similar but much larger blogs.
- I learn something new almost daily (and sometimes it seems like hourly).
- I’ve met some great people online, and learned to respect other intelligent opinions too.
- I make enough money to support my blogging hobby.
- I’ve become a more trusting and friendlier person.
- I’ve learned to have more patience with my family and especially my son and daughter.
- I’ve learned to work for fun
- I’ve learned to get along with less sleep (as I type this at 1:00am)
- I’m able to explore the hidden, creative side of my being, especially with experiments!
- I’ve learned not to be so defensive, and let attacks on me roll off of my shoulders.
- I’ve learned to create pillar posts (like my recent Disney World post).
As long as you don’t let blogging run your life, the above advantage of blogging are great!

I like the creative and social outlet the best.
The worst is it is kind of addictive. I have a lot of other things I need to be doing too and blogging is usually a more enjoyable escape.
Yeah, the addictive element is kind of harsh at times.
I’ve had more fun blogging that I expected intially! It’s been a great ride so far.
I really like number 12. I have started staying up so late to work on my blog it blows my mind that I can still function. I also checked out your pillar post and thought that was pretty cool too. Is that a specific style of posting? I am new to blogging and like you said, learning something new everyday.
Not really, just everything I could type in the few hours I had to write it.
Cool list! Blogging to some extent is also ‘monetizing your thoughts’! 🙂
Yeah, that’s true, but for me, not initially.
I started just to share what I knew, in contrast to my friends. I think my way is a good way to go for people that are similar.
As a newbie, I can see changes in myself! My writing is changing, my focus is changing because of my audience and I think I am getting better. The biggest change is still occurring, I am learning something new!
I hope I’m getting better too!
It’s been an interesting road to here, I’ve made a lot of mistakes. I too, like the learning aspect of it!
I like blogging, but recently I’ve been slowed down by school work and searching for a summer internship. Do you think blogging is something I could put on my resume? ( I could skew the wording by saying I run my own website on pf)
I put it on my resume. I think that growing a blog would translate into a lot of useful skills for an employer. 🙂
I would, it makes you sound so industrious! Plus your site is pretty cool… Try to keep the language clean, and it’s definitely a resume item!
Update: I went in for an interview the other day for a summer internship ( blog still wasn’t on my resume), but I mentioned it and the hr rep seemed very impressed.
“I’ve learned to work for fun”
I couldn’t have said it better myself! 🙂
Yeah, it’s pretty awesome! Like a big fun game that never ends but you get points everyday 🙂
There’s the addictive phase and then there’s the “I don’t feel like writing” phase. 😉 I have really gained a lot from my own foray into blogging and I can relate to many of the points here… it is a lot of fun!
My wife has heard her share of the “I don’t feel like writing” phase 🙂
I have yet to convince her to take over the keyboard and write a masterpiece…
An insightful list, MR. I agree with #1. With #2, becoming more organized is a survival mechanism, as the extra time chewed up by blogging has to be made up somehow!
I wasn’t very organized until now. I’m getting better and better though!
In fact, I’m starting to lessen my time blogging, but just by a little. I could be that I’ve learned a few tricks to make my posts quicker.
Sadly, I’m just starting to build up an article queue. Previously, I wouldn’t keep up, and it was always a last minute scramble.
I don’t really get the big word lesson?
It’s amazing what words come out when it’s past 3:00am in the morning. Actually I’m surprised I didn’t intermix some spanish words too… 😉
