So far I’m starting this year out hard!
2010 was a bad year for me, even though I paid off my mortgage and my sister had a baby! I’ve been hoping that 2011 would be a much better year, but so far, the year is starting out hard!
Hard Events of 2011, so far:
- A old friend’s dad died at the very beginning of the year. I went down alone because everybody in my family was busy.
- A co-worker’s father-in-law died and we were short-staffed at work, so I volunteered to cover third shift while he was in china for two weeks. This shift was draining… I won’t be doing this again, EVER!
- It was determined that my son needs braces, BAM… getting them will cost over $4,000!
- I went to lunch one day at taco bell, and hit the snow-covered wall rim of the drive-thru with my tire, boom I got a flat! Of course I didn’t bring a coat since I knew I was just going through the drive-thru. So there I was changing the tire out in the snow without a coat on. Next I took the tire to a shop to get patch, but the side wall had a tear, so I had to get a new tire grrrr!
No doubt, this is a horrible start of the year! You might think I would be down, but I’m not. Life happens and you need to keep a positive outlook no matter what! So to the year 2011, I say bring it!!!
Life is full of bumps and this year I’m not going to dwell on my problems! It’s full steam ahead for me!
How is your 2011 so far? I still believe this will be a much better year for me that 2010!

That’s not the most thrilling start to the new year, I’m sure. It seems like some bad luck and unfortunate circumstances came together at once in a perfect storm of blah.
Maybe you’re getting some of the bad stuff out of the way before getting into the great stuff this year.
For me, it’s been fine so far. I started the year with some very demanding goals for myself, that I have to say are probably not realistic. I sometimes do that. But, I’m hitting on a few things while not an a couple of others. It may be time to tweak and make a few goals realistic.
Overall, I’m happy to be here. In 20 years I’ll wish I was 20 years younger… You can see the wisdom there that should hopefully translate into this year being better:)
Sounds like you are off to a good start. I’m not going to dwell on my mishaps from the beginning of the year. But it was still nice to post about it just to close the book on those nasty first couple of weeks 🙂
Even though 2011 hasn’t been very exciting for you don’t despair since it’s still in its infancy. I also remind you that as long as you and your family are healthy, it’s always a great year no matter what the number is.
Don’t dwell on this stuff, just look forward and enjoy your time!
Thanks for the support! I still believe this will be a better year than last. All of my challenges from the beginning of this year I’ve handled with style (IMHO).
So I’m still positive, but it is ironic that this is one of the worse starts of a new year I’ve even experienced. lol
*patpatpat* We had to get new tires too.
Thanks for the sympathy 🙂
I am right there with you – I turned down a job offer at the end of last year b/c I was happy with my current position – only to learn the first day back that our company has some things going on that could ultimately lead to my being out of a job within 3 to 6 months. Until then, I’ll be working a lot of extra hours b/c of other people being laid off. And, we just spent a ton of money to find out our beloved family pet has a disease that isn’t treatable. Hoping the rest of the year gets better!
That a pretty rough start! I hope it goes better for you from here!
I would be tempted to call that other company back and see if you can somehow take their offer.
I tried – unfortunately they were offended I had turned them down (it was all of a week and half, and they told me they had no other candidates). Then they accused me of being unprofessional for reaching back out to them….sigh.
Not sure what profession your in, but it seems worth asking to me.
At least you are in a time when hopefully the economy is picking up!
I hope the rest of your 2011 is peaceful and prosperous. Things are interesting to say the least. I’ll likely buy new tires later this year.
I’ll just approach the rest of the year like I got all the bad stuff out of the way early, and it will be smooth sailing form here! 🙂
3 out of 4 of those things are out of your control! Don’t dwell on it. Concentrate on the things you can control.
Good advice,
I’m still positive overall 🙂
Oh dear! That Taco Bell incident sounds like it would put even the most sane person right over the top. Poor thing. 🙁 Let’s see… How’s my 2011 so far? Apparently better than yours. 😉 Keep your chin up, and listen to krantcents’ advice.
Thanks, I’m not really bothered that much by the problems. In fact in some ways I think I have grown from it!
It’s all good 🙂
I ran over a small curb the other day because the snow totally covered it (this was a drive thru too.) My tire survived though, luckily.
Get a second opinion on those braces MR. You don’t want that kind of expense without planning to pay for it with a health savings account. We always got numerous opinions on our kids teeth when it came to orthodontia. (The advice varied greatly by the way.)
Hmmm, good advice… I didn’t think to get a different opinion about it! Thanks for the tip!!!
The curb was hidden by snow in my case too 🙁 I wish Taco Bell didn’t have the tight curb!
It sounds like you’re handling these mishaps really well. I’m with Mich (Beating the Index). As long as you and your family are in good health, the rest is gravy and can only make you stronger.
Any plans to bring the coat on your next trip to T. Bell? 😉
lol, lessons learned from Taco Bell, always be prepared!
Yes, good health and a balanced life all around is a great way to live 🙂
Honestly, I was surprised how well I handled my little mishaps. They disrupted things I wanted to do, but I handled them quite well…
Hey MR, hope the rest of the year goes better. It could have been worse all around. Could have been a tragedy in your family, instead of someone else’s. Could have had an accident, instead of a flat tire. You did the right thing attending a funeral, and reconnected with some friends.
On the braces, I got nothing. Just suck it up. It only hurts once.
Yeah, the braces are a necessary expense! My son is bummed because he will have to wear a retainer for a long time afterwords…
Individually, none of the things that happened to me was too bad, it just that they all happened in such a short time period and all at once.
But as you said “It could have been worse” 🙂
Well, look on the bright side… You got all the bad stuff out of the way first so the rest of the year should be awesome, right?!
That’s exactly what I’m hoping is true!!!
I should now go and play the lottery 🙂
Ouch! A ‘cold’ flat tire and a teeth chattering expense! May be the worst is over! 🙂
It wasn’t a fun experience. Sometimes moving quickly has it advantages. So I got the tire changed as quickly as I possible could!
2 flat tires already, including one with only 10k miles on it (brand new!!) . it was a 80k miles life tire. didn’t realize tire prices have gone up so much until these incidents.
not bad enough to complaint about or dwell on. there are so many more that have it much worse…
