Do Movies and TV Shows Affect Your Purchasing Decisions?

When we were kids, we would see some cool product that a commercial was pushing, come on the TV and we would desperately want it!  This still works with some adults that were conditioned to respond to those ads, by being spoiled as a child!

Those commercials were very effective, and reminds me of the movie Star Wars, where a Jedi would use a Jedi mind trick!  Envision Obi Wan saying “You want to buy the Apple Ipad“!

After a while, clever, witty ads and sheer repetition of those ads, convince us that we really do need whatever they are trying to sell!  Perhaps some people think that owning “this or that” will make them a better person, or at least more popular?  Perhaps they do get some attention at first, but eventually the novelty wears off.

The question is “Does the temporary attention gained via the high cost of the TV Show/movie product worth it”?

Another slick trick that is used to convince you some product is cool is the inclusion of the product in movies with popular actors and actresses

Perhaps, if you’re a guy, knowing that Brad Pitt drives a certain car in a movie plants in your mind that you could win a Angela Jolie look-a-like… if you drive such a car?!?

My wife and I laugh at the products that don’t fit the character’s role…  you know the product makers have to pay a pretty penny to have their product included in such a blockbuster, especially when the products are nerdy and don’t fit the movie well!

There’s an old saying “There’s a sucker born every minute”…  Please don’t be one!  Use your common sense before being persuaded into buying such products based on a movie/TV show…  No matter what Hannah Montana says…

  2. I think DVR has tremendously affected advertisements during commercials of TV shows and movies that are on TV. Sometimes for us, it’s not just out of line product placement (with respect to the character) as much as it is obvious product placement that makes us laugh. In other words, the placement just feels forced. I have become a lot more impervious to advertisements than I use to be, but our society is marketed to at a greater level now than every before. Just think of how many times you see ads on the internet now 🙂

    • I know what you mean. Also, when the movie has kids doing something with a product that’s just plain silly for the kid’s age. For example, 7 year olds drinking coffee or something similar… 🙂

    • I agree, I found a better one of a younger (actually cuter) version of Angelina, but she didn’t have her own page link.

Google Angelina look alike and you see which one I mean.

I wonder how much an Angelina Jolie makes as a look alike… Probably a decent penny!

  3. I guess it’s a good thing I don’t watch TV; I’ve missed the last 10 years of commercials! As for movies, I think I often miss a lot of the adverts since I’m so oblivious to new products.

    • Ahh, your way is the best way! I don’t watch as much TV anymore either, except for News, football and the occasional cartoon/kids show (darn kids!)

All I have to say is… you haven’t missed much 🙂

  4. I’m giggling because just last night we were watching our DVR’d episode of “Hawaii 5-0” and there was actually a point where a character says “You don’t believe me? Bing it.” and she does…Bing must have paid a lot for that kind of product placement! 🙂

    • LOL, that’s hilarious! “Bing it”… I’m sure most of the watchers were like “Huh?”

Bing isn’t a bad term though since it’s similar to ping… Hmmm, naw I’ll keep saying “google it” 🙂

Thanks for sharing, that gave me a chuckle too 🙂

  5. Haha! Great post. The best part was the ending, “No matter what Hannah Montana says…” I think that should be a mandatory disclaimer for all marketing.

  6. Argh, my comment must not have submitted this morning.

Anyway, I always laugh when I see a tv star advertising a home hair coloring product. Really? Eva Longoria uses L’oreal? I have a hard time believing that.

Whenever I see certain advertisements, I wonder if it really ever pays off or not because I know I would not fall for it. But, obviously somebody does.

    • Yeah, I feel the same way! Especially when I see Drew Barrymore in a glamorous commercial. She’s a very pretty lady, but she use to be such a flowerchild, that it always strikes me odd…

I heard that Twilight had a Volvo in it, and the lead character looked silly trying to look cool in a Volvo… That said, I didn’t watch any of the Twilight stuff, so I can’t confirm it…

  7. When I see something advertised I tend to run away from that product. Unless it is a new product when someone has to sell it to you it often stinks or at least is a poor value.

    • I agree! I’m have the same reaction. Of course I grew up in a family that had a retail store, so I was use to that kind of sales pitch…

  9. I caught the “Bing it!” line too this week on H5-0. (The Honeybee and I never miss it.) I instantly thought “shameless product placement.”
    LOL

    • I’ll have to start watchin H5-0, just for that aspect of it! If they do it again, I’ll surely be rolling on the floor!!! 🙂

  11. Even though apple products are hocked all over the place, I still don’t have one.

I wish they wouldn’t advertise food on tv. Sometimes, it does actually make me think about walking up to the fridge to graze. It doesn’t make me want to go to burger king, but it does make me want to eat.

    • Hmmm, that a good point! If commercials constantly show someone very happy when the eat food, perhaps it affects us too.

Interesting thought! I think you may be on to something!

  13. I think the ironic thing about this type of marketing is that although it’s blatently obvious to everyone it still works. Kind of like we know we shouldn’t eat that candybar, but it still tastes good. I think association in our subconcious minds is a really powerful thing that marketers tap into without us realizing… or perhaps I’m just paranoid! Ha

Thanks for stopping over and commenting on PD.

  14. I saw a product advertisement in Jeopardy a month or two ago that surprised me. The answer to a clue was Iron Man, and after that Alex said ‘and remember everyone, Iron Man 2 is coming out tomorrow’ or something like that. I had never heard anything like that before on Jeopardy.

I’m not sure the Volvo in the Twilight movies was a paid product placement or not. It was in the book as well, in addition to Porsche and Jeep, if I recall. They may have just been written in there by the author to convey the type of image she wanted.

    • I believe that about Jeopardy.

My wife read the Twilight books, and she said that the volvo that the book was trying to convey read a lot cooler looking of a car. She said the movie version (yeah, she went…) looked nerdy and not like the one in the book.

      So maybe…

      Thanks for stopping by 🙂
