When I was younger, I had an Uncle (in Delaware) that tried to get me exposure to different experiences. During one of my stays there, he paid for me to go in a helicopter ride. To date, this is the only time I’ve ever been up in a helicopter, it was great! But I digress, during one of the summer stays in Delaware, I went to a car race. Other than the hot dogs and demolition derby, I was bored to tears. It was loud and monotonous. Although I was young, I just wasn’t impressed.
But to be completely honest, I can’t afford to attend the event…
Here are the cost calculations:
- Ticket cost from $52 to $2,243 dollars! Wow, $2,243 dollars for 1 ticket! Geez
- The drive down and back, maybe $250.00
- Hotel cost? $100 a night minimum (and most of the people I spoke to are staying down for 2 nights
- Food? Just a conservative guess maybe $150 per person (for 2 days)
- Beer at the event? your guess is as good as mine? maybe @20.00?
- Going out to the bar scene? This is probably optional, but I know at least 1 friend that is doing this! I’m not going to guess a price.
So taking the minimum numbers listed above, the conservative cost comes out to be almost $800. and that’s just for 1 person to go down! Note, that the 2nd person would be less expensive because of the gasoline required to travel down would not increase (much) nor the hotel costs!
The ironic thing is most of the people I know going down to attend this even are not in anywhere nears as financially secure as I am. Most are in debt big time. I’m willing to bet that most Nascar viewers (at least the ones out of state) owe a decent amount on there credit balances!
I would like to say it’s okay and if that’s what you enjoy the live how you want to live, but I can’t! If you want to become debt free (let alone financial independent), you’ll have to stop spending money and practice a little restaint. There are plent of things I’d like to do to, but being financial secure is more important!
Yikes, that is a lot of money. I guess I am glad that my husband and I don’t have any real hobbies other than reading and hanging out! 🙂
I personally am not in to car racing whatsoever, but I know a lot of people also love the Kentucky Derby. Again, no interest for me, but people seem to have a really good time.
yeah, i never got into car racing. Seems like 500 laps is a lot to watch. Maybe if it was shorter, it might be more fun to watch…not sure. Of course, i’m talking about watching on TV..i’m sure it’s a heck lot different watching it live in the stands.
@Everyday Tips
I have a brother-in-law that usually goes to the Kentucky Derby every year (except this one). Sounds like a really wild and crazy time… Who would have guessed…
Luckily, I don’t have any expensive hobbies like that either! But my buddies seem to enjoy the races (or at least the activies surrounding the races).
@Money Green Life
Yeah, it’s a lot louder (as I remember when I was 8)… But still it was boring for me as a kid, but perhaps things are different now and I should try it again.
If only I had that kind of money to spend freely…
I never really understood all the hype behind Nascar. I find it really boring and the equivalent to going to an overpriced state carnival… but that’s just me. Kudos to them for being able to market it so well and make so much money off it!
@Ryan @ Planting Dollars
Yeah, personally I don’t get it either.
Surprisingly, my friends that go down do it a few times a year. But they are also the ones in big debt… go figure…
I don’t get nascar at all! But NY Football isn’t cheap at all! Giant tix are 90 to 110 (before next year’s new stadium)! Beers are 8 bucks! Parking is 20 and it keeps going… BUT I LOVE IT
@Evan
I like football, but not enough to pay for tickets. I’m lucky though, I have a friend that does business with a business that occassionally gets season tickets to a loge seating or seats on the 15 row yardline. Free tickets are best, especially when it’s in a loge!
debt is blind. some people just don’t care and except the will be financial slaves for the rest of their lives. its silly cus all they need to do is put the same energy they do into Nascar into their finances they be twice as successful.
@James
In my one buddy’s case, he’s complains about the credit card companies, then he spends like crazy. Buying thing that are even necessary like an expensive tractor. But he lives on just and acre of land, and he doesn’t even have a garden…

How do you compare and contrats Nascar live and TV?
TV, just wouldn’t catch the magic of being there. Or at least, that’s what my buddy claims.
