Starting A New Lifestyle By Taking a Month To Prepare

In the past I use to make resolutions, then after the first week when I didn’t hop into those new resolutions instantly, I would give up on them thinking that I already violated those goals so why even try.  Obviously, this wasn’t the best way to accomplish such goals.

This year, I’ve learned my lesson!  From this point on, January of each new year will be my transition month into the new year.  So instead of jumping into a new lifestyle head first, I’m going to the shallow end of the pool and easing myself into my new mindset and lifestyle.  No more “cold turkey” dumping the old and jumping to the new for me.

Some of you can jump right in with the new year.  You planned your strategy in December and jump in head first on day 1 of January.  If that works for you, then great!  I just find that December is too busy for me to adequately plan my strategy.

So you might be wondering how I’m going to start my preparation for my lifestyle change…  Well tonight I’m going to hard boil eggs!  Not very exciting huh…  Then the next day I’m going to eat two eggs for breakfast as part of my weight loss program.  After eating my eggs in the morning, I’m going to start developing the dietary path for my weight loss portion of my New Year resolutions, and let the strategies for those resolutions develop from that point.

Oftentimes, the hardest part of change is the first step, so for me the first step is boiling eggs.  Not sexy, but a start!

So I start my lifestyle change be using a simple task to ignite the process.  I would like to say that this is the first time I’ve used such techniques, but it’s not.  I use similar tasks and tricks to help me write the assembler and operating system software back during my college days.  So in a way, instead of waiting for perfect inspiration or betting everything on day 1 of the New Year, instead I’m going to trick myself and do whatever it takes to change my lifestyle.

And now I’m off to boil eggs…

    • I find two eggs (hardboiled) both very filling and cheap. They are the perfect protein source to boot!

My goal is to lose weight and save money at the same time.

If you are going on a low carb diet, then eggs are a great food source, at least in my opinion.

    • Recently, I believe that they have proved that the bad cholesterol in eggs is balanced out by the good cholesterol. Of course I would encourage readers to do their own research and then make a decision…

But for me, two eggs a day is perfect.

An Egg white omelette sounds pretty good!

  1. Whatever works! I would not enjoy hard boiled eggs, I understand the lifestyle change. When I lost weight, I brought my lunch with things (raw vegetable) I could eat at anytime. I ate my lunch or the things I brought over a 3-4 hour period. It worked for me!

  2. I don’t do resolutions…I do goals and objectives. I have found that the goal of saving X works better for me than resolving to be more frugal.

I know it isn’t the point of the post but check out Mark’s Daily Apple – really cool site.

    • Exactly, I’ve done the jump in and suffer, then get out quickly with goals. Now I would rather slowly seep into the water. Much like a space shuttle coming in atmosphere at a perfect angle.

    • Plus the beauty of hard boiled eggs are they are easy and relatively quick to make. Plus, you cook them once and you have a meal for 5 or 6 days straight! A great bonus for a time crunched schedule already 🙂

  3. I like the idea of transitioning. I have some lofty goals, but haven’t nailed down (what feels like) a complete list of resolutions yet. Oh well… Don’t want to over-commit myself. 🙂

    • Yep, even if my goals aren’t defined by the end of the month, I’m going to keep going with it… The key is don’t get discourage and make it work…

    • Eggs are one of my favorite food, and very healthy since it’s considered a perfect protein source.

I’m not quick enough to see the entire picture like some, so I have to go through this exercise 🙂

  4. Great post. I think more people should start the new year like this. Too many people put no thought into their proposed changes and give up in just a few days. Your approach allows the time to think about what needs to be done to make a plan to change behavior.

    • Thanks! Yep, I was one of them that would give up after a few day, but those days are over. Now I’m doing what works best for me, even it if takes a bit longer.

I haven’t heard of many taking a full month to mull and prune their thought on resolutions, perhaps I’m over-thinking them too, we’ll see 🙂

    • The think about the hard boiled egg is that I’m starting slowly and letting the resolution snowball gather weight and momentum. So cumulatively it will be awesome, and I’m starting which is the hardest part many times.
